July 2011 – After Going to the Eastern Sierra Jamboree in June I have wanted to go back and see more of the Sweetwater Mountains and the area. This time I asked a friend of mine, Keith, if he would like to go with me to explore more of the area with me and he said yes. He’s the friend of mine that got me interested in quading back in 2006, and then I went out in 2007 and bought 3 Quads. That’s when this all started for me and quading. Keith has a Sport Quad but instead of using it he is always welcome to used of one of our Suzuki King Quads so he could ride a further distance on a tank of gas, carry supplies and be more comfortable for the long rides we are taking.
On this trip we stayed at the Meadowcliff Lodge and RV Resort at 110437 US Hwy 395, Coleville CA 96107. The Meadowcliff has motel rooms and RV spaces for rent. Call 530-495-2255 for prices and reservations. We stayed in the RV area and it is truly first class. At the RV Facility you have access to the Restaurant, Gift shop, swimming pool, first class tiled Restrooms with tiled showers, laundry room, and clubhouse with patio with BBQ. Tim the owner was more than pleased to help us in directions on where to stage and go quading. It’s a great place to stay with a Toy Hauler and has all the hook ups you need.
Our first day was riding the Sweetwater Mountains. We started off by staging at the North end of the paved part of Eastside Rd.
You can click on the pictures to make them larger. For a slide show video click here!
From there we drove into the Sweetwaters by way of Risue Canyon Rd ( 050 ). We stopped at an old mine and took a look around and took pictures. Then we saw a herd of sheep in the burned area along the way as we climbed in elevation and then made our descent down into the Desert Creek area.
We then turned left on Desert Creek Rd. (027 )and started down the canyon.
There are six creek crossings as you make your way down Desert Creek road and everyone of them just a little different than the next, some harder than others because of the direction of the water might be coming at you. The sixth creek crossing we came to looked the most challenging for crossing and even worse coming back so we decided to, since we were going to be heading back the way we came anyways, head back at this time.
So we crossed through the creek five times on the way down and five times on the way back up which made for a sweet water crossing ride.
We rode back up to Risue Canyon Rd. then drove east to a right up Jackass creek (067 ) all the way to the base of the mountains.
On our way to lunch.
We had lunch at the upper end of Desert Creek at a creek crossing. From there we looked right at the mountains that we were going to climb.
We took two different trails up into the high country from the upper Desert Creek area. These are pictures from the first trail.
There are three mountain peaks in this area we were quading. South Sister, Middle Sister, East Sister.
Wild flowers , everywhere we looked it look like a bouquet of wild flowers. And the smell of Sage just made the trip even better.
These are pictures from second trail that starts from Desert Creek up closer to Lobdell Lake. Mt. Patterson area.
Now we are heading down the mountain to Lobdell Lake and then make our way back to Walker and to the truck.
Pretty Meadow on the way to Lobdell Lake.
We saw some big Aspen Trees and a beautiful meadow as we made our way down the hill.
Driving down the Canyon we could see West Walker River and Hwy. 395 below.
We made our way back to the truck, packed up the quads and went back to our camp. After a good shower and some clean clothes we went out to dinner at Johnny’s Roadhouse .
Johnny’s Roadhouse Restaurant is at the junction of Hwy 395 and Hwy 208 in Halbrook Station. My opinion, “it is the best place to eat in the area”. I had Chicken and it was great and I’m always looking for a good Coleslaw with just the right amount of spices and this was the place to get it. I loved it. They have salads , Sandwhiches, Burgers and Dinners and they all look good.
The next Day we went to Bodie Ghost Town on our Quads from a staging area near Bridgeport Lake.
Have fun Quading.
